The Cornerhood and Hoverhood
steel construction dust
extraction shroud prevents dust
escape when grinding floors or
polishing concrete.
Many
contractors risk silicosis, a
disease of the lungs by not
using a dust extraction shroud
when polishing the edges of
concrete floors.
There are a few reasons for
this:
Unlike steel dust extraction
shrouds some flexible
shrouds rely on heavy
friction with the floor for
their success which prevents
the operator from feeling
how flat the pad is riding
over the floor. To achieve a
high quality of finish it is
important for the polishing
pads to run smoothly with a
light feel.
When polishing edges the
corners must look the same,
however many dust shrouds do
not allow for grinding close
into corners so using a
polishing pad without a
shroud is common practice to
get into the corners.
Black seals or flexible
shrouds can mark a newly
polished floor and the
walls, in fact anything that
touches the floor or walls
may mark it so using no
shroud and wearing a mask is
the alternative.
When no shroud is used silica
dust is thrown into the air
which is not only a health
hazard, it also doubles the time
for concrete polishing because
cleanup after each pass takes as
long or longer than the
polishing process and the walls
can be damaged by the dust too.
Look for a steel dust shroud
for polishing which you can find
through tool shops and
speciality floor polishing
distributors that is shaped with
a corner piece and a seal
wrapped around the perimeter.
When the corner shape is sitting
in a corner of two walls the
polishing pad protrudes through
the seal on both sides of the
corner shape allowing the pad to
touch both walls at the same
time yet having a seal to
prevent dust escape.
White, non-marking rubber is
used on this shroud for the seal
which is hook and loop attached
to make height adjustment quick
and easy. It is very efficient
for the pick up of dust because
all the airflow passes under the
seal where the dust is generated
which is then kept in the
airstream that flows out to the
dust collector via the port and
vacuum hose.
This type of shroud can also
be used as a concrete grinder
for small areas as well as a
benchtop polisher and a floor
edger.
